French List: Les Faux-Monnayeurs

The important stuff: Written by Andre Gide in 1925 (translated as The Counterfeiters)
What it's about in a nutshell: Bernard and Olivier are good friends just stepping into the world of adulthood.  Olivier is pretty much dealing with his sexuality, and Bernard is dealing with finding out that his father is not really his father.  Bernard gets a job traveling with Olivier's uncle Edouard.  I promise the book is way more entertaining that just that though.
Why you should read it: There are quite a few different plot lines going on at the same time, and I loved thinking about the different ways the title fit into the story (there's the very real counterfeit money, but then there's counterfeit people as well).  I also really loved the characters and how they discover themselves throughout the novel.  Also, I did my 20 minute oral report when I was studying in France on the whole counterfeit part of the book, so it has a soft spot in my heart (because I totally aced that report).  Olivier was my favorite character because he could be so dramatic and emotional.

  1. Gide has long been on my TBR -- this sounds like one I should give a try because I do love the dramatic sounding plot!
