Review: The Entreprenurial Linguist by Judy and Dagmar Jenner
As some of my blog readers may know, I have always been very interested in freelance translating. I'm seriously considering starting to do it part time, and this book had so many great tips! Dagmar and Judy Jenner are translators and interpreters, and hey, their company is called Twin Translations! Yay for more cool twins ;) They have a background in business and I would say that they are pretty successful in what they do.
A while ago I read and reviewed another translation book, How to Succeed As a Freelance Translator by Corinne McKay. This book touches on a lot of the same topics, but deals more with direct clients and has really sound business advise for anyone looking to start doing this themselves. I think if you're going to read McKay's book, you should also read this one because while a lot of the topics are similar, each book has a unique perspective.
So this book has chapters on starting out, accounting and opening up a new bank account for your new business, how to market yourself and get your first clients, as well as how to build your client base. The sections on pricing and how to balance your work life with your personal life were some of my favorites.
You can really tell that the Jenner's know what they are talking about and have a lot of experience. It's also comforting to know that people as successful as them had to start from scratch as well. I highly recommend giving this book a read if you are considering freelance translating, or really any sort of freelancing work, because a ton of the information in here can be used for other types of freelancing.
If you find this book to be interesting, stop by in a few days because I'll be posting my review of Corinne McKay's How to Succeed as a Freelance Translator Second Edition. I read The Entreprenurial Linguist and that one in the same weekend and it was awesome having 2 amazing resources for information.
