Another Classics Club Spin!
So you guys....I failed miserably the last time I decided to do the Classics Club Spin. I didn't even start the book!! (It's was Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility) I do still plan on getting to it..
I'm hoping to be more successful this time around. Here are my randomly selected 20 books. I can't wait until the number is chosen next week so I can find out what I'm reading!
1. Guy de Maupassant - Bel-ami
2. Victor Hugo - The Hunchback of Notre Dame
3. Rabelais - Gargantua and Pantagruel
4. Alexandre Dumas - The Man in the Iron Mask
5. Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities
6. Nathaniel Hawthorne - The Scarlet Letter
7. Madame de LaFayette - La princesse de Cleves
8. Alexandre Dumas - The Three Muskateers
9. Elizabeth Gaskell - North and South
10. Marquis de Sade - 120 Days of Sodom
11. Charles Dickens - Bleak House

Oooh, beefy list! I'm posting mine tomorrow -- we both have the Hemingway in common! If you haven't read Rebecca, that's the one I'm hoping you'll get as it might be my all-time favorite book in the history of the universe.
ReplyDeleteOh, Audra, you're participating, too? How fun!
DeleteDu Maurier's Jamaica Inn is one of my all time favorites-it's the book I read when I need to clear my mind and read something comforting. I've read it so many times. So I am really hoping to get to Rebecca soon, regardless of whether it's my next spin book!
DeleteNice selection of books! I enjoyed The Woman in White, The Hobbit and Rebecca.
ReplyDeleteI have a few of these on my 50 in 5 list, but excluded them from my 20 spin list this time around because of length. Time always escapes me fast.
In the past I've chosen only books I have on hand or could borrow from family. This time around I literally just went to random.org and got random numbers from my original classics club list!
DeleteOh, I love your list! Lots of French authors, of course! I have Swann's Way on my list too but a different number so we couldn't get it at the same time for support. I must check out Andre Gide. I've heard his name but know little about him.
ReplyDeleteI hope that get a book that will inspire you to read!
You have got to read Gide's Les faux-monnayeurs (translated I think as The Counterfeiters?). It is one of my favorites ever. He is wonderful!
DeleteI have just requested it through ILL. I'll let you know what I think when I finish. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
DeleteI just finished Nana - amazing book - I'm now a Zola convert!
ReplyDeleteI took a class in college devoted to Zola, and we read 2 of his books, Le ventre de Paris (The Fat and the Thin I think it's translated as?) and L'assommoir. It's so dense but I adore his writing style. I'm really hoping to have an excuse to lose myself in another Zola novel!
DeleteYou've got some daunting ones on here! I love The Sun Also Rises--my personal favorite Hemingway novel.
ReplyDeleteI've actually never finished a Hemingway novel! I tried For Whom the Bell Tolls and got distracted and never picked it up again. I really want to give him a second chance because so many people love his work.
DeleteGood list!
ReplyDeleteThat is definitely an admirable list! I'm with Audra - I hope REBECCA ends up being your spin title. It's one of my favorites as well!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's Rebecca too! Though even if it's not I'll probably end up reading it soon anyway.
DeleteMany of my favorites are on this list: Rebecca, Bleak House, The Woman in White, North and South, and the Hobbit!
ReplyDeleteGood to know! This is getting me more exited to find out what I'll be reading :)
DeleteI have North and South on my list. I have never read anything by Zola but have Germinal on my list for this spin.
ReplyDeleteOoo you really need to read Zola! It can be super heavy and slow going, but it is totally worth it.
DeleteThose are some nice picks. You've got four or five favorites of mine (The Woman in White is so much fun, as is The Three Musketeers). Good luck with your pick!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm excited to find out what I'm reading :)
