Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop
So I wanted to post this hop yesterday but Blogger was giving me issues and I could not for the life of me get anything typed and posted :(  So here it is today!
The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly hop hosted by Crazy-for-Books and is a way for bloggers to find other great blogs to read and make new friends in the blogging world.

This week's question:
Do you use a rating system for your reviews and if so, what is it and why?

My answer:
I do not use a rating system.  I find it really hard to categorize how much I liked a book by numbers.  Instead, I prefer to lay my opinion out.  I like to state exactly what I liked about a book and exactly what I didn't like about a book.  That way, no one is swayed by a book right away by seeing a number rating.  Plus, everyone has different opinions about different books, so I think it's good that readers can see exactly what I liked/didn't like because what I didn't like, they might like, and vice versa.  I just think it's easier for both me and the person reading my review.  I do add my recommendation at the end if I really loved the book though, and sometimes I try to tell readers what kind of people might like the book more than me, etc.

However, I do also love reading blogs that do use rating systems.  If I'm in a hurry but see that a blogger has reviewed a book I'm interested in, I will often just scroll down to their rating to see how they liked it.

What are your thoughts on ratings??

I can't wait to hop on over to other blogs to catch up on both blogs that I'm alreading loving and following from the hop, and to find new blogs :)  I'll be doing that later today and tomorrow though because right now I'm on my way out for Buffalo's Elmwood Art Festival!

  1. Hopping by to visit and follow! Loved your post on school reading lists.

On review grades, I think it's fine for book bloggers to just enjoy books and talk about them, but I assign letter grades so that I can be a help to friends and other bloggers who are trying to figure out which books are worth buying--it's just a way to classify the things that I think are really high-quality. :-)

  2. Hi, I am a new follower from the hip book hop. I hope you will check out my eclectic blog and enter my contests.

  3. Thank you for hopping by my blog. I see you are currently reading "The Time Traveler's Wife" - how are you enjoying it? I listened to it on audio which was a good thing. Don't think I would have been able to read right through it.

  4. Hi Chrizette :) I'm really liking The Time Traveler's Wife! The only problem is that I've seemed to have misplaced it..and haven't been able to read it for about a week because of it! I need to do some house cleaning today in hopes of finding it!

  5. I don't have a rating system either, I see your reading the time travelers wife, while I had some tiffs with it, the emotional rating was all the way. how are you liking it so far? Lovely blog and am now a follower, just hopping on through

  6. Kika-thanks for stopping by :) To answer your question-there are a few things about Time Travleler's Wife that I don't like, but for the most part I really like it so far. I've currently lost the book though and want to find it so I can finish the book!

  7. I'm not a fan of the rating system either. Or I suppose I should clarify and say only having a rating system. I see the benefit to having one if someone wants a quick view, though I wouldn't add it to my site. I much prefer to read and discuss a book instead of giving it some value. I'm never sure if your 5 star book will be a 5 star in my world unless I know why you loved it so much.

  8. Hi Kelly,
How was the Buffalo's Elmwood Art Festival! Find anything nice?

Thanks for stopping by my blog last week :)

hmm.. why don't u try have a rating system? well, sometimes like you said, people will search for teh high rated books,,then only read the review :)

    anyway, have a great weekend
