Review: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (and book club recap #1!!)

**This review contains spoilers**

Gone Girl.  I put this one off for quite a while because all the hype around it made me a bit suspicious.  But then my friend and I decided to start a book club, and Gone Girl was our first read.  And I am so happy that I read it!

I'm assuming most people know what it's about.  Beautiful wife goes missing, and all clues point to the husband, who keeps proclaiming his innocence.  What happened to Amy??

I thought that this was going to be just your typical crime novel, but it was a bit more fucked up than that.  Amy and Nick seem to have the perfect life on the outside, but once you step inside, you realize that that is definitely not the case.

So I am now going to talk about a few things we discussed at book club.  Because it makes for a more interesting post.

-Basically, none of us saw the twist coming.  we loved Amy, thought she was the coolest and sweetest thing.  We were very suspicious of Nick, especially since right in the beginning he says that he has already lied to the police 5 times.  We also discussed the ending, how it pretty much couldn't have ended differently.

-A topic we talked about for quite a while was whether Amy would really have killed herself.  What do you guys think?  I feel that she was just too wrapped up in what everyone was saying about her.  She never would have done it because she would have wanted to be alive to see everyone's reaction when they found her body.  She was basically feeding off of the media.

-Amazing Amy-We discussed how her parents books about this perfect little girl could have affected Amy growing up, so she was always acting, always someone else and not really herself.  Like when she talks about the "perfect" girl, and how there is no such thing as that type of girl, we all just pretend to be that person so that boy like us.  Everything to Amy was a game, and she loved to play it.

We talked quite a while about this book (considering only three of us could make it to our first official book club meeting!), and these were some of the main points.  Have you read Gone Girl?  What were your thoughts when you read it?
